Every year on the 29th April, the world celebrates International Dance Day or World Dance Day. Brands, influencers, content creators, and individuals celebrate this day by dancing their hearts away and creating memorable videos on social media. Social Media is packed with some thoughtful campaigns, collaborations and amazing performances for this day. 

Why is International Dance Day celebrated?

April 29 is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet. The day is a message to everyone in the world to revel in the art form of dance – any form of dance. The intention of the International Dance Day Message is to celebrate dance, across all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language – dance.

We’re looking at a few brand campaigns that made World Dance Day memorable.

1. The Canadian Dance Assembly (CDA)

The Canadian Dance Assembly celebrate the day chain linking dancers across the country with the #passthedance challenge. Dancers were asked to tag 5 friends and pass on the challenge to them. The organization then shared the best dance moves on their Instagram handle. 

2. Book a Smile

Book a Smile, a Book my show initiative and Victory Arts Foundation, a Shiamak Daavar initiative, worked towards organising dance workshops across NGOs in Mumbai.

3. Disney+

Disney + brings out all its movies that showcase some cool dance moves. Check it out, maybe you’ll find a new dance movie to watch.

Disney India

Disney India is not too far in encouraging its fans and followers to tag those friends who love dancing anywhere and everywhere.

4. Discovery

Did you know about the dance of nature? Yes! Animals dance too. Discovery created a super cool compilation of some of the weirdest dance moves that inspire real dance styles today.

5. Gold’s Gym

Dance is an excellent workout and pretty much everyone knows it. The fact that it puts you in a good mood is an added motivation to workout. Gold’s Gym reminds us why dancing helps keep you fit.

Every goal is celebrated with a signature move and the Premier League brings you those groovy dance moves from the talented goal scorers. Tell us whom did you like the most? Jesse Lingard’s Hip Hop move, Peter Crouch’s robot man or Michail Antonio’s worm on the field? 

7. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department

At 2K likes, 68K views and 113 comments you know the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department caught everyone’s attention with their call to join the force.

8. Portronics

Portronics India lines up a groovy playlist, but not without a message. They’re asking you to dance with compassion and make a difference while you do it.

9. Royal Opera House

Celebrated after a ballet dancer, this tribute to International Dance Day had to make it to our Top 15 campaign list. Watch the Rose Adage from Petipa’s classic ballet, The Sleeping Beauty shared by the Royal Opera House. 

10. Reliance Digital

India is blessed with many dance artforms. Some traditional and some western. Reliance digital reminds us on International Dance Day to play the music and let loose.

11. Tata Sky

Tata Sky roped in Madhuri Dixit Nene to kick off the #UnitedByDance campaign for their Tata Sky Dance Studio 123 channel. People were invited to share their dance videos and tag the brand using this hashtag.

Winners were chosen over 2000 entries and featured on the brand’s social media page as well as on the channel. The campaign was refreshing for social media users amidst a very serious lockdown and performed very well.

12. VYRL Originals

VYRL is Universal Music India’s property to encourage and promote Indie music and original music that is not part of Bollywood. The artists on the platform have a cult-like following. So the brand leveraged it on World Dance day asking its followers to pick a dance partner for the day.

13. Water Kingdom

Water Kingdom the popular water park in Mumbai launched the “#Apnadanceisstyle” challenge. The challenge encouraged fans and dance lovers to make reels tagging the brand and using the hashtag. Winners received Rs. 5000 Amazon vouchers.

14. YRF – Yash Raj Films

YRF, India’s largest Bollywood Production house has produced some of the most popular movie hits with great dance numbers. They brought out all the big hit dance numbers in one mashup for their followers to #rockthelockdown.

15. Zee Telugu

Zee Telugu pushed the message of staying in for International Dance Day during the pandemic. Real life couple Siddharth Varma and Vishnu Priya performed on a popular song and requested followers to #StayHomeStaySafe #WeStayInCoronaStayOut
