The year 2020 has been a thrill ride. While the Coronavirus has dominated this year, people across the world came together on Twitter sharing the stories of loss, courage, change, and much more. To no wonder, the hashtag #Covid19 and other variations were tweeted nearly 400 million times, while #stayhome was the third biggest hashtag of the year. #2 – PM Narendra Modi

Unsurprisingly, PM Narendra Modi topped the politics category for the most retweeted Tweet (106.5k) in India. For his pictures showing support for the lightning of lamps on 5 April as a tribute to healthcare workers and corona-warriors- #9pm9minutes. This year PM Modi also bagged the tag of third most followed personality on Twitter with 60 million followers after Barack Obama and Donald Trump. 

#3 – What people retweeted across the world. 

Here are some of the most retweeted Tweets of the year 2020. From mourning the loss of Marvel’s “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman to fun in quarantine, the Twitter audience talked about it all. 

#4 – Worldwide Activism on Twitter

People across the globe came together on Twitter for advocating the need for equality and social justice. The usage of hashtag #transrightsarehumanrights increased by 557%. And, the second most-Tweeted hashtag of the year was #BlackLivesMatter. The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter exploded on Twitter after the murder of George Floyd by the US police. Even thousands of people protested against it and raised voice against Racism. George Floyd was also the third most-Tweeted-about person globally.

#5 – People discussing Tv Shows on Twitter.  

Globally, over 7,000 Tweets were shared per minute about the TV shows, series or movies. Big Brother Brasil topped the list for the most discussed Tv show. Surprisingly, even after a year of broadcast, Game of Thrones secured its position on the list.

Over 700 million Tweets were sent in 2020 about elections around the world and Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, and Kamala Harris were among the most Tweeted-about people globally. People have been effectively utilizing the platform to voice out their concerns and injustice or discrimination. This makes Twitter the best platform to reach global leaders and lawmakers. 

 Kamala Harris’s video congratulating Joe Biden made its way to one of the most retweeted Tweets in 2020. 

#7 – 2020 most Tweeted about musicians. 

For the fourth time in a row, the South-Korean band bagged the top position among the list.  This seven-member boys band has become a social media sensation captivating people worldwide. Their fan-gang keeps getting bigger and their fans call themself A.R.M.Y. an acronym for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth.

Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles.
